Our History

Schilling Bros. Lumber Co. was founded in 1945 by identical twin brothers Frank & Louis Schilling.

The story goes back to at least 1899 when Louis B. Schilling, their father, was a leading developer and home builder in southern Chicagoland. L.B. Schilling was an industrious man who had grand visions for the time and made good on some of those through his developments and homes that set themselves apart from others.

L.B. Schilling started developments in Schererville and Dyer, Indiana in the early 1900's and built hundreds of homes.

Frank & Louis, while helping their father, ventured out and opened a gas station in St. John, Indiana in the 1930's. This was the lone station on a 2-lane gravel US 41. When the World's Fair came to Chicago, the additional traffic helped them succeed and prosper.

In 1945, Frank and Louis purchased land across the street from the gas station and founded Schilling Bros. Lumber to help supply their father's building business and try to gain a footing with other builders. Louis stayed with building and Frank ran the lumber business.

Frank's two sons, Jim and Frank, came into the business and Frank sold the business to his sons. The pair set out to grow the business and over the years, Schilling Bros. Lumber Co. has grown from the smallest of lumber yards into the market leader in N.W. Indiana. Frank Sr. stayed on and came in every day until 2 weeks before he passed away in 1998 at the age of 89. Jim passed away in 2000.

Frank continues to lead the company into the future along with the help of his four sons Todd, Dean, Greg and Jeff who went to college and returned to join the family business.

In 2007, Schilling Brothers purchased a warehouse in Cedar Lake, Indiana and opened a 70,000 sq. ft. Distribution Center in which to more efficiently warehouse and ship cabinets, flooring, windows and doors to businesses and homeowners.

Today, Schilling is a single location lumber yard with an offsite Distribution Center. We have over 200,000 sq. ft. of warehouse on 16 acres.

Schilling continues to be the market leader in N.W. Indiana and eastern Will County, Illinois and beyond.
